Digital Eatery, Unter den Linden 17, Donnerstag 19 Uhr im Rahmen des
WordPress Meetup Berlin gibts nen Vortrag von Maja Benke über den neuen Editor für WordPress: Gutenberg.
The goal of the block editor is to make adding rich content to WordPress simple and enjoyable.
Warning: This is beta software, do not run on production sites!
The new post and page building experience will make writing rich posts effortless, making it easy to do what today might take shortcodes, custom HTML, or “mystery meat” embed discovery.
WordPress already supports a large amount of “blocks”, but doesn’t surface them very well, nor does it give them much in the way of layout options. By embracing the blocky nature of rich post content, we will surface the blocks that already exist, as well as provide more advanced layout options for each of them. This will allow you to easily compose beautiful posts like
Gutenberg is built by many contributors and volunteers. You can see the full list of contributors in

How can I send feedback or get help with a bug?
We’d love to hear your bug reports, feature suggestions and any other feedback! Please head over to
the GitHub issues page to search for existing issues or open a new one. While we’ll try to triage issues reported here on the plugin forum, you’ll get a faster response (and reduce duplication of effort) by keeping everything centralized in the GitHub repository. How can I contribute?
The more the merrier! To get started, check out our
guide for contributors.
Please don’t make it as a default editor on WordPress, it really sucks. I’ve used a lot of editors in the past and this is by far the worst one.
No clear direction, no roadmap, no attempt to prepare the dev community or site owners for this monstrous change.
A decision forced upon billions of websites and livelihoods of millions of developers.
If you are so keen to bring visual builder in WP page editor – give people a choice to select between the new and old editor during installation.
You can’t or you won’t? No one is in a hurry for this drastic change.
I totally get what your are trying to do with this project but it’s taking authors down a tricky path.
I tend to write is fits and spurts and spend time moving a shifting chunks of text around. I add and remove headers, lists, images and so until I have a structure that works for me. Because of how the blocks are used copying and pasting becomes very difficult. I tried to add a list the normal way (by hitting return and then changing the group into a list) but I couldn’t do this.
I wanted to change a line of text into a header but it’s now two actions (used to be click on the drop down and select) with those awkward floating boxes that won’t go away.
Media handling isn’t good at all. I wanted to add an thumbnail image to the left of a paragraph and I couldn’t, none of the usual options were there. I can see that I can resize but There is no option to use the presets (so all images are the same size).
I sort of gave up a this point I it become increasingly difficult to fix the layout the way I wanted.
If Gutenberg remains an option then that’s fine but please, please, please don’t make it core.
It’s very good to move blocks.
I use it in Japanese environment. Very good
Gutenberg opens the door for a whole new way of building things with WordPress. A –maybe harsh, but still– really welcomed change.
The block editing is useful and clear.
P tag included for paragraphs.
The formatting controls above the text are handy (but I expect some people will want a toolbar at the top of the editing screen).
Figure markup for images etc.
Tables: easier. Some things still missing from here eg captions
Lists: easy enough.
Cut and paste: sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. It should. Many people do this. When I paste some copy written somewhere else I want line breaks observed.
Images: how it works now (v1.1.0) seems incomplete (I want the option to set size please). Why does WP still want images to have a title attribute when there is a caption, alt text (but no magic to convert the Description field into a longdesc URL and content)?
Text view: the code Gutenberg adds for blocks and the great sin of inline styles. It makes the Text screen for the editor unclear. It is possible to write one big block (a P tag/block) with titles, lists etc in and avoid this mark-up. Perhaps Gutenberg doesn’t recognise and parse this yet. This shows it is unnecessary for a well-formed post. And is it necessary for the writer to seet it at all on the editing screen, it is for WP’s processing benefit, not the writer’s.
The “rich” colour, size, font options on blocks risks making this the Myspace of blog editors. Writing clearly in the backend for a clear front end read is a discipline. The editor is not where anyone needs the chance to unleash their inner child.
It would be good if there was a toggle to turn “features” properly dealt with by CSS on/off at an admin level.
I note this scheme is not implemented for some blocks yet (eg lists).
